TAVIRA TOP 10 PLACES!
Welcome to Tavira! We love this place so we want to share some of our favorites must-visit locations, things to do and places to eat while you are staying in this region.
1. Barril Beach
Barril Beach is stunning! Located in the Tavira Island, close to the village of Pedras D’el Rei it is only accessible through a characteristic mini train. This beach was once a tuna fishing community and their houses were converted into restaurants, cafés, and shops. The old anchors were placed in the sand beds and are now known as the Anchor Graveyard.
2. Tavira Island Beach
Tavira’s Beach is located in the east limit of Tavira’s Island. This island extends for approximately 12km and is connected to the mainland through a ferryboat. This beach is ideal for families, with long sandy areas and clear calm waters. On the island there are touristic attractions, restaurants, coffees and a camping park. The ferryboat is frequent and regular, leaving from the Four Water Dock in Tavira center to the Tavira Island Dock in them and vice-versa. Then you walk about 400m to the beach between pine trees.
3. Cabanas de Tavira
This small village is forever connected to its fishing roots. It started as a place where tuna Fishermans built huts to store their tools but now its a beautiful touristic town connected to the beach and Ria Formosa Natural Park. Nowadays one of the main activities still is Tuna fishing as well as shelled seafood capture.
While in the village you can visit the Nossa Senhora do Mar Chapel, which has an image of this saint inside, acquired by the population. The chapel was remodeled in 2008 to resemble a boat, in reference to the village main activity.
4. Car tours through Coastal Algarve
One of the best ways to know the surrounding area of Tavira, especially if you haven’t rented a car is to enroll into one of the many car trips available. Get to know the local historic villages, the farmlands, the eastern costal Algarve, the Ria Formosa Natural Park and many others. You can get information on the routes available and how to rent them online or at the Tavira’s tourism post office.
5. Nature boat tours
A second option is to travel by boat through the beautiful coastline of Algarve. There are boat tours available to take you from Cabanas de Tavira, and around the Ria Formosa Natural Park. You can get information on the routes available and how to rent them online or at the Tavira’s tourism post office.
6. Ti Maria
Restaurant with traditional food, great service, and environment. It s closed on Sundays and can be very busy in the high season. You should give it a try.
7. Come na Gaveta Gastro Bar
This restaurant presents several options, since Tapas, Salads, and Mains, inspired by Portuguese traditional cuisine but refined with contemporary influences. Totally in location right in the middle of Tavira. Check it out!
8. Gelatarias Delizia
For a sweet tooth, you must try this one: there are two of these ice cream shops: one at Tavira Old Market and another at Cabanas de Tavira. No excuses for not trying one of their locally made and very natural ice creams. It’s a really special treat!
9. Noélia & Jerónimo
This restaurant has the fame of being one of the BEST in the whole Algarve. And the fact is that you must book ahead, especially in the summertime. The food is super flavorsome with local and fresh ingredients and it shows! It’s in Cabanas de Tavira and closed on Wednesdays.
10. Pedro
Typical traditional Portuguese food. The restaurant is located close to the river and has a terrace for you to enjoy your meal in the open when the weather is nice (most of the time actually).
